A major tropical holiday destination situated within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm in a deal said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.

“It is an honor to continue the legacy and commitment of the Oatley family has established in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” stated a senior representative.

The Reported Sale

The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – which also owns the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending customary regulatory approvals.

The family released a statement saying they were pleased with the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of many Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.

The Island's Size and Amenities

Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and about 500km south of Cairns, Hamilton covers more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.

Roughly 30% of the land is developed, featuring a significant array of facilities:

• Five separate hotels
• More than 20 restaurants and bars
• Twenty shops and retail spaces
• An championship 18-hole golf course on adjacent Dent Island
• A boat marina and a commercial airport

Hamilton Island is noted as a major job provider in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and workforce, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and area businesses.

Historical Context at Ownership

The deceased Robert Oatley, a renowned yachtsman and winemaker, first bought the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsunday passage.

Hamilton's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted domestic holidaymakers from inland areas and southern states.

Broader Portfolio and Regional Background

The acquiring firm also owns hotels and luxury resorts in multiple nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

The area is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the HMS Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
