Ghostface OG Star Matthew Lillard Is Anxious He Could Ruin the Series with Scream 7.

The highly anticipated slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters next year, and it is gearing up for a major gathering of familiar faces. This new chapter marks the legendary return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, following her absence from the previous film. She will, as usual, be alongside Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters making a comeback.

"Coming back to a character you played in your twenties when you're in your fifties was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," the actor admits.

An Unexpected Comeback for Fallen Favorites

It has been established that three distinct characters from past films are slated to reappear in this new outing, despite meeting their demise in previous installments. The exact mechanism of their return is still unclear. Fans should get ready for the reappearance of the beloved and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the original killer pair, Stu Macher.

The Pressure of Iconic Status

For Matthew Lillard, reprising his role in the franchise for the first occasion since a small cameo is a dream come true, though he is apprehensive about the audience response. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he received the news from the original writer.

"I remember the conversation. I recall the small talk. I recall him posing the question. That instance is permanently etched on my psyche," he says. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."

Stu Macher has attained iconic status in the years since the original film was released, which left Lillard feeling quite trepidatious.

"The reality is, that's a role that lives in infamy, for better or worse," he notes. "A part that is now represented in every single Ghostface mask that appears every October 31st."

The Fear of Disappointing the Fans

Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is waiting as everyone else to see the final product. He admits to feeling immense anxiety about hoping not to be the one who ruins the popular franchise.

"The outcome is either a hit and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I don't know if the film will gonna work. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've definitely seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they returning to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not mess up the franchise. I hope people leaving Scream 7 and thinking, 'Well, that was terrible, and Matthew Lillard was the reason.'"

Theories and Anticipation Run High

While countless longtime fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return persists. Maybe they exist rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, like a prior storyline. Or, perhaps they are somehow all alive in a strange shared scenario. The chance of a meta-horror narrative, inspired by classic horror movies, also exists.

Audiences will find out the answer when Scream 7 debuts in theaters.
