Adult Swim's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Renewal for Two More Seasons.
In October of last year, Adult Swim saw the return of its unconventional hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the network unveiled a completely new animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns was sweet and soothing, evoking a animated take of a laid-back talk show. In an era often characterized by bleakness, this show's sincerity found an audience and turned it into a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, the network made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three respectful teenage brothers whose defining trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the fans of the show who took a chance on the show and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Executive Acclaim
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "To quote: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. It offers something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa expressed his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the cleverest viewer in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we just have to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
Future Seasons
Given this two-season order, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa may well catalyze that very evolution. Or at the very least, the renewal guarantees audiences additional episodes to experience the heartfelt moments of the unique Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. The entire series is currently streaming on HBO Max.
